Are these speed tests correct?

It depends entirely on the actual service you are paying for. Only if the results you are getting are dramatically lower than what you are paying Cox for should you have any reason to question the results, and then only if they are slow all of the time. And if that is the case, you should talk to Cox about it.

edit: Just for a comparison, I ran a few tests on my connection with that site. The site itself is pretty cool looking, but the results are completely BS (first run was nearly 3X my actual download speed and the next three were anywhere from 1/4 to 2X, upload never got to even 1/2 of my actual speed on any test), so I wouldn't trust them anyway. Try running several tests on www.broadbandreports.com and see how your results there compare with the quoted speeds you are paying for from Cox.

Either look at the contract you signed when you purchased the service, or call your ISP and ask them.

Slow?!?! Those numbers are slow?

Maybe if you lived in Europe. Those are screaming numbers for the states.

Almost 13 megs down and that's slow?

Maybe I've got my head up my patoot.

Quickly converted chart assuming 1 Kilobyte equals 1024 Kilobits, for his reference and so no one gets confused.

His Download Speed:
12725 Kilobits/s
1591 KiloBytes/s
12 Megabits/s
1.6 MegaBytes/s

His Upload Speed:
558 Kilobits/s
70 KiloByte/s
0.5 Megabits/s
0.07 MegaBytes/s

From the looks of things it seems you are paying for a 12Mb connection, around where I live the highest I believe is 8Mb, so overall it looks correct.

Also ISP plans vary from place to place so your buddy could be paying less for a lesser quality plan or you posted (or he told you wrong) those numbers wrong.

That is not slow!!!

That is fast!!

Get over it!!!

:)

BTW did you mean 2500 down or did you mean 25000 down?

If you meant 2500 you have a much faster connection at least when it comes to down.

I wouldn't assume that just from results on speedtest.net. I have a 6mb download/768k upload cable connection and I got results anywhere from 2mbps to 17mbps download and never more than 200kbps upload when running tests on that site. I get fairly accurate results from other sites like Broadband Reports, which is why I recommended running tests there before reaching any conclusions.

Well I have the same connection speed as you but when I test it is within +/- 5% of what I have which is a respectable outcome. Now if your fluctuating that much then something isn't correct and I wouldn't know what it is, whether its your ISP or the site.

I suspect that certain locations on their test "map" aren't reliable. I played with the speed tests again today and got very steady results from some locations, and extremely erratic results from others including the one that Noobtastic used.

Well distance from the server usually does affect the download speed(Eg. The greater the distance the slower it will usually be). Which when your at the map, that what the purpose of the golden pyramid is for, essentially saying it is the closest to you so you should pick that one.

I mean if I were to pick a place say half way across the world, my speed will only be about 1/4th of what it was if I test by what is closest to me.

The interesting thing is that if I pick the sites closest to me (I'm in Salt Lake City, UT) , I get completely inaccurate and erratic results both far above and far below my connection speed. Selecting sites several hundred miles or more away gives consistent results that are close to the actual speed of my connection. I get the same inaccurate results when I use the same Los Angeles server that Noobtastic used, as well as the Washington DC location and a few other east coast sites.
