Part of the reason you're getting raped is that you're going to the dealer.
There are some repairs that are better taken to the dealer. Other repairs, such as timing belts, can be done far cheaper at an independent garage.
I also question that the timing belt was diagnosed as the cause of a noise. That sounds fishy to me. A timing belt either is fine, or it is broken. (Although on many engines, the instant the belt breaks the engine self-destructs, so this is definitely a maintenance item if your engine is an "interference engine." If this engine is an interference engine and had high miles, replacing the timing belt was a good idea noise or no noise, but was overpriced and I still question how the noise was related to the timing belt.)
