Are these marks on my cpu bad?

A month ago my computer shut down and started beeping. I turned the computer back on after a few minutes and checked the cpu temps and they were around 100C so I shut it down and opened it. The stock heatsink on my i7 920 was very dirty. The thing is I was drunk so when I tried putting it back on after cleaning it I broke one of the legs. I noticed some diagonal marks on the cpu do they mean anything? I don't wanna buy another heatsink if the cpu is already broken. Then again the computer was working fine last time I used it before I shut it down.

Looks just like dust marks from the heatsink. See if you can wipe them off.

is it ok to use an old t shirt for that?

Just clean it with a paper towel whetted with 100% rubbing alcohol.

Actually an old T shirt would be better.. It is probably lint free, whereas the paper towel could leave residue behind..

Actually now that I look closer that CPU is bad. Those diagonal marks are the L3 cache burning away. Cache always burns like that. CPU cores burn straight out.

Really? L3 cache doesn't extend over to the CPU bracket :p

Those are dust marks. Reapply thermal paste and put a new heatsink on and you should be good to go.

ha-ha very funny. what i mean to ask is, if my computer was running fine last time i turned it on quick to check the temps before i shut it down again, then it should be ok right? so i dont buy a heatsink for no reason

That's the Grim! You will die horribly from a rogue bludger in the next 12 seconds!

No, your cpu is fine. Buy the new HS and you'll be gtg.

I totally agree. Did you turn on the PC without the heatsink ? 100c ,, my goodness.

Leave your case door open , open a window ,,,,,,, and make sure the OC and video card are on stock settings untouched.....

It looks like thermal paste. Whatever it is you cant damage a CPU no matter what goes on the top of it. Like Bryan said, get a good sink and your good to go.

now this is just my experience here but to me that looks like his magic smoke has left his cpu and got caught by the heatsink.

OP, that gray stuff came from inside the procesos. You need to finda way to get it back inside. if ur lucky you still have some magic smoke left, maybe 1 or 2 cores still work.
yep. seen it many times in my day.

Clean the processor off and put some new thermal paste on it and a new HSF (heatsink/fan) and away you go.
