Are these blown capacitors?

In Pic 1 look at the bottom row.

See that dried ****** on the tops of the caps? I presume that would explain why the computer won't POST?

What's strange is the computer was working up until I turned it off a couple of hours ago. My parents said they had a lot of power outages the past few weeks so I presume it got zapped during one of those and somehow the caps stayed together (probably from heat) until I turned the computer off and let it cool down.

Those are what I consider blown caps. I had a mobo with some of those that did work, but it would not always boot cold.

blowout central! 😛

If the board has a warranty you should RMA that sucker.

Just throwing in another yes. It's not a pretty sight. There was a P3 board at my old job that had this happen.

IBM 6578 are notorious for this. IBM bought cheap boards and they go everytime.

i think blown may not be it. they're leaking capacitors. the ionic fluids in them have leaked out. this has been a common problem on a lot motherboards in the past few years due to a bad mix formula. i had this problem on my epox 8rda+ about a year ago. the computer suddenly stopped working and there was no cause for it. i was browsing the forums and other ppl had this problem too w/ that same mobo. luckily i was still under warranty. if you're adventurous you chould always try replacing the caps yourself.

LOL it's a 8RDA+!! My guess is the caps were going bad anyway (I can vaguely remember having random reboot issues over the summer), and our power surges did them in.

Is XP going to throw a hissy fit if I replace the mobo with something that isn't exactly the same? I have no time right now to reformat this for my parents.

if a replacement mobo is cheap, then replace it. if >$80 and the pc is still relatively new, do it yourself or warranty

No, do a repair install.

Oh actually I'm stupid and it's 2K on that computer. Can I still do a repair install with 2K?

Woot. Now to convince my parents they're better off spending $65 and getting a new board I can hopefully install on Saturday, rather than waiting forever for EPoX to RMA the thing if it even has a warranty.

Anyone know by chance if the 8RDA+ has a 3 year warranty? Anything shorter is worthless to me at this point.

Wow that must have been one hell of a power spike. A couple of the caps in the power supply have leaking electrolyte too. And now of course I have to try to buy a new power supply on Black Friday.

The power supply is probably fixable. I'd have to guess mobo is gone. Maybe I'll take the PSU back to school and get a EE to fix it. MEs can't solder. 😛
