Are these a waste of money?

the HDD IMHO is a waste, but trust me, getting a nice case is SO WORTH it

also, 1GB RAM is plenty good

get the maxtor 300gb 16mb cache. instead of the raptor u really cant see a big difference. if it was me i would wait for the seagate 16mb cache. also 1gb of ram is perfect for gaming not much people use more than 1gig for gaming. please post ur whole comp i would like to make sure its all good, so would probably everyone else.

by the way the case is very expensive, imo not worth the money if it was me and u like silver i would get lian li check out there cases very good quality same if not better than silverstone.

to get you started www.newegg.com

heres the whole comp:

DFI NF4 Ultra-D
A64 3500+ winchester
1 GB corsair valueram
Leadtek 6800GT
OCZ Powerstream 520
Audigy 2 ZS
*Raptor 74 GB
*Silverstone TJ03
Syncmaster 19" CRT
Logitec 510 mouse
Logitec Elite keyboard
Klipsch 2.1's

-How long of a wait til a seagate 16 mb do you think?.... A 300 GB harddrive seems like a bit much.
-What is with everyone recommending the 3200's over the 3500's? I understand they can be overclocked to 2.4 Ghz but cant the 3500 be overclocked too?? Are the 3200s better overclockers or something?

Well they are $200 less and I don't have a wall directly behind me to mount the rear speakers on..

Actually I originally had the Klipsch 5.1's picked out but I downgraded them to 2.1's and upped my case from a wavemaster to the silverstone.

Why not get 7.1 with a Denon AVR-5805, 7 pairs of Dayton BR-1s, and a Dayton Titanic MKIII 15" Active subwoofer system? 😛 Why not a Krell Refernce sub that has two isobarik 15" subs in a 1" thick aluminum housing?

The price difference between a 3500 and a 3200 or 3000 isn't worth the price difference. And overclocking is a waste of time for most desktop users, because games biggest factor is the video card, and desktop responiveness is limited by the hard drive's seek time.

So you'll spend close to $300 on a case, but you don't want to shell out for a nice 5.1 setup? Are you kidding????

What am i going to do, nail them to the back of my chair??
The closest wall to mount the rear speakers on is a good 10 feet away.

Got the HD down to these two choices now:

maxtor 16 mb cache with a whopping 9.0 seek time. but supposedly its almost as fast as the raptor due to the 16 mb buffer.
and then again, the raptor.
any suggestions on those?

And the 3500 is really only $90 more than the 3200 if you buy it from ZZF. Doesn't seem like a whole lot to me, but what do I know.

Raptors are really nice, and are built like SCSI drives, that's why they are expensive. To the desktop user, they are overpriced, but do offer a more responsive desktop experience. A 15krpm seagate scsi would be even better, but they are $315

Warranties are a bit different also. Raptor= 5yr Maxtor= 3yr

Check out THIS CASE it is what I am using. No door, has 2 covers for the cd/dvd roms that flip down so you can use any color drive.

I've heard Logitech has taken the lead from Klisch in PC sound lately. They have such a wide variety of speakers, and there are nice 5.1 setups in all kinds of price ranges. I'd recommend looking for a midrange 5.1 Logitech setup rather than a 2.1 Klisch setup.

On the case, I recommend getting a nice one (mine sucks, and i'm probably getting a new one) but $271 seems awful steep. I'm looking at a Thermaltake Tsunami tower for $105, those seem pretty cool. All in all, I'd look for front/top usbs, solid construction, a window, and front and rear 120mm fans, but that's just me.

Oh, and about the hard drive, I had a DM10 and i liked it, but there were compatibility issues with the NF4 chipset. I don't know who's fault it is, but i can't test it cause i've already RMA'd it. I think there is new firmware for the HDD, and new BIOS for most NF4 mobos, so i'm guessing one of them has fixed the problem. I'd recommend it over the raptor for the price and larger storage, but a raptor is still a bit faster, and if you find a good deal on one (i.e. $150 or less) then go for it. Otherwise, there are plenty of cheap deals on slickdeals for regular SATAs.

someone likes dayton....why so much dayton equipment? Obviously the sub has some good fame behind it from the DIY point of view....just curious

ah damn cant afford those drives. 36 gb isnt enough and $500 is too much.
I think im going to just go with the raptor and pick up a storage drive if it starts to get full.

Rleemhui

Dayton is Parts Express's speaker division. Thier subs lay the extreme hurt on any brand name subwoofer in terms of performance. They spend thier money on R&D not marketing. And the BR-1's are an awesome value. If it's made out of plastic, it is not a speaker. Cheap plastic computer speakers are for secondary systems only.
