Are these 3DMark scores up to par?

I'm running 3dmark at 1024x768 res 16bit with directx 8 and the 7020 Radeon drivers and I get a range of 3750-3850. Would you say this is a good score for my particular set-up. I'm also really confused why my performance drops significantly when I switch it into 32bit mode. My score drops a lot and my games play much more choppily. Is there anyway I can improve my 32-bit performance? When you install new drivers, are you supposed to manually get rid of the older drivers or do driver setup programs such as ATI's generally do everything for you?

One thing I thought I'd point out before I get to my usual 3DMark bashing is that 16 bit is not exactly the Radeon's strong suit. You will find that the 16 bit scores do not differ much from the 32 bit scores. So the default benchmark by 3DMark will naturally be low for you. Now, back to what you all were waiting for :) 3DMark, to put it simply, sucks. It is not a very good benchmark. For some cases, it will be ok for testing on a single system, ie to test a driver change or something. But as for comparing systems, it is worthless. Use Quake III or some other game to test that. Drakan has a built in benchmark, and that is D3D, so I don't wanna hear people complaining that 3DMark is the only benchmark tool around for D3D.

Deeko's right. The ONLY thing I use 3DMARK for is to check changes on my system. Q3 is a far better benchmarker. And there's no point in using 16 bit with the Radeon. Stick with 32 bit that it was designed for.

Ok, so how do you benchmark in Q3? I know how to run demos but I don't know how to get fps readings and stuff like that to compare to other people. Unfortunately I don't have Drakan

goto the console (press `), type "timedemo 1" no quotes duh, then run the demo....after it runs, go back to the console and it will tell you. As for D3D, download fraps, sorry I forget where you can get it :( but it shows you the frame rate in any D3D game.

Ok, here's the numbers I get running it at 1280x1024 res and 32-bit color and textures with high geometric detail
demo000: 43 fps
demo001: 36 fps

How's that compare?

I am interested in what other Radeon owners got with the new 7020 drivers also.
Here is my setup:
P3 800
MSI 694D
256 ECC RAM
All In Wonder Radeon 32 DDR (not overclocked, newest beta drivers)
Direct X 8
Windows 2000 (forgot OS...)

Quake 3 Highest settings (but with 1024X768, 32bit color)
around 60 fps for demo001
and around 70 for demo002.. I thought these were low, but seeing yours I guess its okay.

3DMark 2000
off the top of my head ~3300.. I know it was in that range.

Guys he's using Windows 2000.

Win2k scores will always be signifigantly slower than Win9X scores. Your scores don't help him unless your running the same OS.

Demo2 85.5

1280 x 1024 x 32
Demo1 54
Demo2 57.5

PIII 700 @ 933
256 meg ram
Radeon 64 200/200 7020 drivers

Ok, here are some new numbers using 1024x768 res and 16bit
demo000: 54.1 fps
demo001: 43.1 fps

do i need to manually delete old radeon drivers after I install new ones??

I'm also running Beta 1.25y instead of the 1.17 point release. Do you think this makes a difference?

Well mine did, but the demos were different from the ones in the 1.17 release. Plus there were three demos total where 1.17 has two demos. I could run timedemos on demo000 and demo001 but for some reason couldn't get a timedemo for demo002 to run. Btw, I installed 1.17 and am getting better fps. Around 45 for 1280 high and 66 for 1024 high
