I ordered 2 Western Digital 74gb raptors to run in RAID 0. And it looks like they sent me 2 raptors, but they look different. Will they work in raid together or will I have problems..and does anyone know the difference between them or why they look different?

Side by side
HDD 1
HDD 2

They will work fine together, they just have slightly differant lables, one was manufactured in 2004, one it 2005, they haven't changed the design of the drives at all, just have slightly differant lables.

They have different firmwares. This may or may not cause an issue in striped configuration. It will work but I always prefer non SCSI array members to have *identical* firmwares.

For reference, the disk on the left is FW 00FLA0 and disk on the right is 00FLA2.

Weren't there some problems with the FLA0 ? To the OP, email Western Digital about that. I swear I read that there was some sort of problem that was corrected by FLA1 and that the FLA0 drives were not supposed to be purchaseable.

BTw, I have FLA1 and FLC0 in Raid with [EDIT] NO discernible problems

Yeah I don't think the firmware would make a diference, and why do you run a raid0, when are people gonna learn......ROFL

Some people want that .0000000000000001 picosecond of extra speed and others just like the simplicity of having the space show up as 1 drive in windows. Others are too paranoid and worry: oh teh noes! My drivez gonna fail 50% sooner mathmatically speaking!!!11!1!!!1111

Don't hate others systems. You got yours running the way you want it. Other people have their systems set up to their preference. That's why a majority of us here build our own. PCs are not a one size fits all type of a deal. If we all wanted the same, we'd all have Dells.

Now have a  on me. Cheers! :)

Very true, and very well put sir. I think the reason that so many people on here go with a Raid0 is becuase they think it will give them some spectacular speed increase, which simply is not true.

I am not making fun of anyone's machine, I am simply saying that I think so many people actually are under the misconception that a Raid0 will make your machine faster. I think people should just read and research before they go and do something so foolish that's all.

Well said. The ongoing criticism of what other people want to do with their computers here is getting tiresome. If he wants to RAID, he can do that. It's his hardware.

I will admit that I have 2 x 74GB Raptors set up as a RAID 0... only because I had never set up a RAID before for a home computer and just left it since it works. Although in my next Windows reinstall in a few months I will not be going with a RAID :)
