Are there truly any games so realistic they're boring?

On console, no. On PC, ever heard of Arma? I know you aren't supposed to run around like John Rambo, but the alternative is to lay down and take a nap for 4 hours until you actually see someone running across an open field.

lol, yeah, my son is a 3.5 yo and LOVES tractors. I saw there were some games on steam. Caught a few youtube video's and you seriously drive tractors around and harvest etc etc. He loves just watching the videos...

I've never understood the appeal of those games. Who wants to play a simulation of an activity that people literally will not do unless they are paid to do it? Hell, if it's a good sim, you can skip the game and just get a job as a trucker, get the sim experience of a lifetime and pick up an extra $40,000 a year. It's like a game that pays you!

I am totally the opposite. I love the controlled track environment of the racing over some silly city "racing" game. But, I also will never get to drive some of those cars around a track. I doubt Ralph Lauren will let me borrow his '57 Testarossa for a track day.

The difference is, Arma has so many options and freedom available to you, you can play it anyway you want.
It's just that realism gets in the way of the "hurr durr ima run at teh guy and shoot from teh hip and hit him 100 yards away" mechanic of the brain dead shooters.

Once you've experienced a deeper game like that, it is infinitely more rewarding and satisfying than the alternatives, outside of just wanting a quick shooter fix while eating pizza and talking on the phone.

I understand Arma and it's appeal. I just think it isn't fun. The run and gun style of "lesser" FPS games is a lot easier to just jump right into, kill some dudes, and move on.

Plus, Arma 2 (haven't played Arma 3) was clunky in the interface and buggy.

Going back in time, remember Sim Earth? Oh man, who'd though being the god of your own planet would be so boring. The sim would basically run itself.

Maybe Shenmue? I still haven't gotten around to playing it, but I've heard you have to get "real" jobs within the game to earn money. It does have a cult following because of the attention to detail though.

Racing sims are only boring if you play them like arcade games with all the assist turned on.

Play them in simulator modes and try and maintain any track position and you'll see why they are so much fun. Though, you should probably like racing before doing this...

i used to love them--in sim mode. Gt3 I dumped huge hours into, but then it just seemed like the new games offered nothing more than updated graphics. At the end of the day I cannot enjoy racing games now.

Really most things too realistic are boring. Red dead redemption had a mission requiring the player to coral cattle. It had another forcing the player to take a horse, and I was such a profoundly unfun mission I stopped playing the game right there and then.
