Are there still places around that will pay you for your recycleables?

I'm trying to get rid of a bunch of old magazines, and I figured I might make a few bucks if that's possible. I know back when I was 12 or so (1992) we used to bring all of our aluminum cans and newspapers into some recycling place and we'd get $25 for a months worth or so (hey it was a lot when I was 12).
This was, of course, before the days of our curbside recycling programs. Does anyone still do this? Anybody happen to know of anyplace in the Chicagoland area that might do this? I tried google, but a variety of searches turned up nothing but places that charge you to pick up the stuff. Anyway thanks if anyone knows anything.

There are still a lot of places around me, but I live in a rural area. 5 cents per can, but paper is pretty brutal, it's about 1 cent per 40 pounds.

Yeah...I kind of figured the payment would be minimal these days. Oh well.

Anyone want a bunch of old Men's Health, Bicycling, and Mountain Bike magazines?

Niobium is even bigger. If you've got some old Niobium jewelry (some piercing parlors used to feature it), it's now worth more than five times as much as silver.

Talk about "investing in your navel!"

Yeah...apparently this summer there were numerous A/C thefts in the city. Punks would yank window units out to pull the copper tubing out and sell to scrapyards. So I guess I can do that, huh. Or pull all of the BX out of my house and sell that.

Hah...can you imagine being robbed, and having nothing taken except for your AC unit and all your electircal wiring?
