are there "social" clubs/groups in area

So I want to extend my social network and meet new people while learning a new activity or starting some kind of hobby. something like book club, tennis club, golf club, etc etc.

If I was still in school, I would be able to join various student clubs, but now that I'm out of school, I really dont know where to look and/or where to start.

Are there places throughout the U.S that offer this type of activities? Are there certain categories in the phone book I should look at?

any suggestions?

That actually might make you rethink the whole meeting new people thing.
