Not really, if you are looking in the prosumer market you can't get a decent 1080 cam for under 3-4k.

I have the Sony HDR-HC3, which is about $1100 or so. Absolutely awesome picture compared with standard MiniDV stuff. Canon's HV-10 is slightly smaller and less expensive.

If you can find the Sony HDR-HC1, you will be better off as it offers more options than the HDR-HC3. It was selling so well that it was cutting into their HDR-FX1 line, so they killed it, and put out the HC3 as an "upgrade" but with less features.

It really depends on what you're looking to use it for. The HC3 is smaller, has an integrated lens cap, and a noticably better low-light picture. Color & contrast wise, there are differences between the HC3 and HC1 too. The HC1 and A1 are great choices though.

HC3 has less manual control and no mic in / phone out (a disturbing trend in $1k vid cams). But the HC3 has a fix for the red washout that the HC1 has (you would probably not notice it, but pros do.)

The HV10, when manually color balanced can match the FX1. More at DVInfo
