Are there laws against intrusive software? (adware, spyware, etc.)

I'm getting real tired of having my home page reset, random ads popping up even when I'm not on the net, crap being downloaded and installed without my consent. Unfortunately my virus scan won't pick up that kind of stuff.

Are there laws against software that installs and reconfigures people's PCs without their consent?

What do you use to remove spyware. adware and that other crap that's creeping up on the web?

I am not sure about the laws, but i think it's time you get Adaware, Spybot, and Spywareblaster. Also, get Firefox.

I use this combo and I never have any intrusions (or they are removed quickly)

Ad-Aware - Great for scanning registry/hard drive
SpyBot great for scanning registry
Spyware Blaster helps stop spyware in it's tracks, disallowing installation

Edit: Links Added

Yup, big fan of Ad-Aware. Spyware blaster is good too. Using them in conjunction is a real good way to stay protected.

Don't install it in the first place.

You shouldn't be having any of that happen without your consent. No offense, but are you paying attention to what you are doing?

I'm very careful about what I install, but I think because I'm all over the place on the net I occasionaly pick up some unscrupulous software.

No, because you always agree to their terms before installing the software. If you choose not to read them, or accidentally click yes before reading, then it's all the same.

As far as I know there aren't any laws against it. The reason for this is probably because most members of Congress are old dudes who don't know very much about computers.

when you click on the porn popup that says "yes i'd like a free membership", that's probably when the spyware is installed.

I know better than that. I only click yes to adds that feature transexual school teachers who tell me I've won 20 million dollars.

Amen. I'd rather people be forced to READ before clicking (AIM virus?) than have more government involvement.

see link below . it will tell you were the spyware is located. you have to get the program though to get rid of it. It is not a free program because it gets updated constantly by a large staff unlike spybot and addaware. Spybot and addaware are good to have though.

AdAware is updated constantly by Lavasoft. they have a staff on hand that maintains it. i get updates for it about once every 2 days. they also provide the scanner and the remover for free to the average joe. while i admire patrik kolla a great deal more becuase he is does all of what he does for free, i do have gratitude to lavasoft for at least providing the personall addition for free, javacool's spywareblaster and spyware gaurd provide most of the features of the pro version of adaware for free
