Are there good free VPN services?

Let's say I'm using the wireless access at school or at a coffee shop. I know that I could possibly use SSH or VPN back to my connection at home to encrypt my traffic. I've tried SSH and I'd like to also give VPN a try.

Assuming I don't have the ability to VPN to my router back home, what are my other options?

I've seen services like Hotspot Shield and SecureIX that provide VPN services. Are these trustworthy in the sense they don't collect data?

Why not just run some VPN software on one of your home machines and use that instead?

I don't usually leave my desktop on at home if I'm not using it and my WRT54GL running Tomato firmware doesn't support VPN (at least not without the VPN mod but it's currently all command line based).

1. Win XP can work as a VPN Server, it slow but ir works.

2. Router's that can be flashed with the Full DD-WRT can become VPN End Point.

3. You can buy an VPN End Point Router.

4. UltraVNC can connect with a an AES Encryptiom Module and exchange file remotly.

AnchorFree's HotspotShield seems is already using OpenVPN.

And yes, why not flash your WRT54GL with DD-WRT's VPN version?
