I'm digging through pricewatch to buy an SB Live and I have noticed that some say there are 1024 voices on the wavetable, some say 512, others say 256....now I'm planning on getting an optical otu daughtercard so I need to purchase wisely. Are there different OEM flavors of the SB Live Value or are these just typos?

There are two versions that I know of; one with digital out (the newer one), and one without.

The newer one may also have a Livedrive connector, but I'm not sure.

There is the SBLive Value and what is known as the SBLive Value version 2.

The SBLive Value (original) has no digital out, unless you go buy the special bracket available at Creative's Blaster Shop. It does have the pins for CD Digital though.

It only has 4 DINs.....Rear, Line Out, Microphone, Line In.

The SBLive VE 2 has digital out with 5 DINs, the same as above, with an additional Yellow digital out. It also has the header to plug in a LiveDrive, or an equivalent from Hoontech. The original SBLive VE does not, nor can it take advantage of the extra bracket that the original SBLive Full had. Usually the SBLive VE 2 has no pins for the CD digital in, although it does have the solder points.

Theoretically, if I wanted to use the digital out of my DVD player, I could run a wire from the digital out to those solder points, correct?

There is the old SBLive! Value
It has Line Out Front/Rear, Line in and Mic in.

The newer Live! Value is the same card featured in the SBLive! Platinum, X-Gamer and MP3+ I believe, but it come with no software at all, and of course no live drive, though it does have the connector for it.

You could yes, though it would not do much for you.

The 2pin internal S/P DIF connection is for CD Digital Audio only. Your DVD player sends all audio (in digital form) across the IDE and PCI busses. The presense of this 2pin S/P DIF connection has exactly no effect on the audio of a DVD.

The only thing this cord does is lets you transfer audio from an audio CD in digital form, so you use a DAC on the soundcard (or possibly speakers if you use digital out on the soundcard) instead of the DAC in the CDRom drive. So it will probably help your CD-Audio quailty a bit, but has absolutely no effect on DVD audio.

The reason I asked was because I recently bought an optical out addon so tha tI could record music to my minidisc digitally. This would (in theory) help me with that, correct?

i got the older SBLive Value on a P3 and the newer SBLive Value2 on a Celery system

the SBLive Value has primary colors connecters on the back and the SBLive value2 has pastel colors connecters
as you guys pointed out the Value2 has SPD/IF connecter output

HOWEVER, the Value2 DO NOT have CDROM-Digital Audio Input into the card, that has been removed and you are left with inputting CD-Audio as Analog. This actually means a DEGRADE in CD-Audio playback on the Value2 card since the DAC used to convert CD-Audio is the CDROM drive itself(usually not very good) instead of the DAC used on the SBLive

since my speakers do NOT use SPD/IF output from the SBLive, i actually like the ORIGINAL Value1 card. Due to the CD-AUdio input issue.

Did you consider the Guillemot Maxisound Fortissimo?
IT supports EAX, A3d, AND has TOSlink output (full sized toslink, not the miniplug kind).
