Are there cheap alternatives to the Elfa shelving system?

i have 1 standard bedroom im going to convert to an office space. instead of going with a computer desk (kinda ugly) or a plain table (no shelves = not useful), im planning on running shelving down the entire length of the room using Elfa

Elfa is a top track that is drilled into the wall, and you hang the multiple vertical tracks off of it. along the vertical tracks you can hook in these arms to support flat tops... so these could be various color, length, depth, width, etc... (ie shallower for books, deeper for computer top)... very very flexible shelving system

I was going to run this along the full length of one side of a room, and throw a futon on the other side of the room. A utilitarian and clean work/reading room.

Anyway, the Elfa system itself kinda pricey. Are there cheaper alternatives out there? Are the bits and pieces available at a home store?

That's a really common shelving system actually. I'd wager you can buy it without the elfa brand name at Home Depot or Lowes.
