Are there "better" optical mice?

It sure seems to me as if my mouse is sort of "jumpy." I am not sure why. I find it unusually bothersome when the cursor and mouse either lag too much or the cursor seems to jump around. I am not sure if it is a problem with the surface I am using, or if I somehow changed the mouse settings. Happy to buy a better mouse. Maybe I can print something and use that under the mouse - suggestions? I am using graph paper right now.

It would help to know what mouse you are using now and whether you have tried others. Or whether you are using a wireless mouse. Windows 8.1 also has mouse lag issues. Why use a crummy piece of paper when a $1 cloth pad works well. You have some leads to guess where your lag problem stems from.

I have used the 3m surface for years, but irc it did not seem to work well, so I just grabbed some graph paper and used it.

Get a Logitech mouse with the darkfield sensor (MX series). You can literally use those mice on a glass cutting board and they will still track smoothly. Once I started using those mice I threw away my tracking pads as they simply weren't needed anymore.
