Are there any truly collectable Japanese cars?

Eli's post in the 70's car thread brought this question to mind (1979 Nissan : 280ZX )... Everytime I think of a collectable car, I think US made. Gimme some examples!

its simply age, 60's cars were american cars. when caddies were tops, not like now where caddies barely have any prestige anymore.

I think it should actually be Datsun 280ZX.. :p I don't think they started branding the cars Nissan until the 80s. Could be wrong though.

Yeah.. The Z cars definately do have quite a following. I'm getting sucked in. :Q

:)

I'd say most older cars have some group of people that collects them.. some larger, some smaller.

Late 60's Hondas (the little motorcycle engine powered ones.)
Early 70's 240z's. Possibly later ones too...
Late 60's early 70's Datsun pickups.
70's Datsun 820's (I think? The precurser to the Maxima...)

Those are the ones off the top of my head. I don't think any early Toyotas qualify, but could be wrong.

Even the Z32 300zxs are collectibles more or less. I've seen people sell mint showroom condition sub 1k mile ones on ebay.

Datsun "Fair Lady" Roadster (1600/2000)

The Original 240z (Datsun) (a "real" sportscar in the european tradition - all the other - later - Datsuns/Nissans [260/280/300s] are posers)

Mazda Cosmo (RX-5) (BTW, I still have 2)
early RX7s (and RX4s - usually highly modified for racing)

They're only collectable for someone who wants them. I personally wouldn't take any of them as a gift.

There are definately ones waiting to become collectables with age....supra, rx7, silvia, 300s, altimas--I mean, that's my car :D

None of the imports match up to american muscle when it comes to collectables.

According to who? I would take a new cadillac over a lexus, infiniti, acura any day of the week.

Based on what? The Japanese simply WIPE the floor with cadillac in every aspect.

Lexus, infiniti, and acura doesn't need to give out incentives to sell their cars like Caddys. And when the Caddy's have same interior as their GM cousins, that really says a lot. Atleast change the consoles and what not, if they're charging an arm and a leg for it. Make it more prestigeous.

I personally feel that Cadillacs interior is much more luxurious than the japanese cars....also they have the power I would demand out of a large car. The all around ride quality also seems much better, the others feel tin-can like.

I've got one and will probably will never sell it. Imagine an Evo coming out 13 years ago and dealers having trouble selling them off the lot and you've got the Galant VR-4. 200HP stock with potential of over 400HP with constant new aftermarket parts coming out for it 12 years after they stopped selling them in the US. I know some guys that have had 3 or 4 of them at one time.

The VR4 Galant was a sweet car. Mine friend had one but its a gas guzzler isn't it?

The Toyota 2000 GT is that the car in the James Bond "You only live twice" where he goes to Japan?

Edit: Forget it. Google is my friend. Yes it is. That is a nice car.

I'd say Miatas, Supras, Skylines, Z's and NSX's,

(Reasoning being that the Miata brought back the roadster, the Supra and Skyline are the only true, full blooded Asian sports cars, the Z's are just awesome, and the NSX is an exotic and is therefore collectable by default)

Edit: And the 2000GT. And probably a few others that I'm not familiar with. They do exist.

No it isn't. Do you think that 10 years from now people will be actively seeking out 70s American cars? I think not.

The Supra is a collectible already. People are selling pristine (not modded) early 90s Supras for $25-30k easily.

As long as you don't get it into boost too much you should do better than 20mpg in mixed driving. Any worse than that is probably a problem that needs fixing. On a road race track all bets are off and it can get into the low teens.
