Are there any towns near austin texas that are worth living in besides austin?

I'm searching for homes in austin because i think i might be moving there. I'm also considering towns just outside of austin. Any nice ones? I think i might want to be close to round rock as well since there's a lot of jobs there too...

just your typical suburban setting i guess..

As long as it's low crime, near austin, has a few essential stores, i'm happy i guess. I have no kids so schooling isn't an issue (yet).

Round Rock would probably be a good choice then, there is alot of development north and northwest of Austin that has quite a bit of price range. Buda is south of Austin but is still a way from being well developed (stores, etc), but it is quite cheap and has low crime.

This will probably greatly depend on where you are going to work and what you define as essential.

Actually i might be telecommuting. My fiancee would probably have to work at an office though (she's an accountant), so wherever the jobs are!

Is Round Rock considered a city? I know dell is there...Also is the commute from round rock to downtown austin bad?

Round Rock for all practical purposes is north austin, but it is an incorporated city. In good traffic it is probably 15 minutes from Round Rock to downtown, but austin shares I-35 with the rest of texas, so it is often congested.

Austin in general is pretty compact, especially when compared to other cities of similar size. You can get from one end of Austin to the other very quickly, except during traffic hours. For office jobs north Austin (Round Rock, Leander) is certainly your best bet.

Round Rock, Hutto, and Pflugerville are basically North East Austin. It is about 20 mins to downtown at non commuting hours and 35~45 minutes with morning traffic now that the toll road is open. If you live in Round Rock and have a job in South Austin then the drive will be a bit of a PITA.

I personally love the towns west of Austin at the start of the hill country (Dripping Springs, Johnson City). I don't know how long it takes to go to downtown in the morning though.

Traffic coming in from any of the suburbs is going to be horrendous. Austin's highway system needs a major overhaul it is likely never to get.

Round Rock or Pflugerville are both good choices. Cedar Park and Leander may be an option for you if you don't mind ~45 min commute to central Austin (houses are cheaper though).

I live right in between Austin and Round Rock, and have just about any store I need within 15 minutes drive.

QFT.

Austin has grown so fast that the roads have been unable to keep up with the volume of cars.
IMO, that is the biggest downside of living here.

What kind of radius are you looking at for the "essentials"?

As everybody's already said, Round Rock and Pflugerville are practically Austin with numerous stores along 35. Leander's a bit farther from everything, but it should be much better once the 183 tollroad opens up. Maybe now's the time to buy before that finishes up?

We live in Manor which kinda sucks cause there isn't much out here, but the houses are relatively cheap, and the commute doesn't bother me at all (20-30 minutes to UT, 20 to my old job on Parmer). The commute is worse for the bf though which is about an hour to 2222/620.

If you see you and your wife working in North Austin, Georgetown isn't really that bad. I've known lots of people who make the commute, even if they work downtown.

The one place I would stay away from right now is Cedar Park. There are some nice things out there, but it's way too far with only one road (that I know of) out of town.

You don't want to live in Round Rock. It's exactly the same as a Houston suburb, and is not even in the hill country, so it LOOKS like a Houston suburb. Austin does have some nice enough suburbs, but you can't go wrong with Far West, Hyde Park, etc. Austin is far better than Houston at least for urban neighborhoods.

I lived in Hyde Park. Didn't you live there too?

Edit: Oops I misread.

The only urban neighborhoods in Houston that don't suck is River Oaks, and some of Montrose. Proportionally, it sucks compared to Austin.

With the exception of some areas in and around the Med Center and the Galleria most of it certified ghetto.
The only nice areas are generaly in the Suburbs. Katy and Sugarland to the west, The Woodlands/Conroe to the north and Pearland/Friendswood/Webster to the south. East of Houston is an industrial wasteland and almost as ghetto as the urban areas.

If it's because of price, Austin isn't a whole lot more expensive than the surrounding cities.

Georgetown, Round Rock, Pflugerville, and the others nearby are pretty much like Austin--only less crowded.

San Marcos is a little different as they have a college there (that's not as good as UT)

Temple is up the road and is a little more country.
