just your typical suburban setting i guess..
As long as it's low crime, near austin, has a few essential stores, i'm happy i guess. I have no kids so schooling isn't an issue (yet).

This will probably greatly depend on where you are going to work and what you define as essential.

Round Rock would probably be a good choice then, there is alot of development north and northwest of Austin that has quite a bit of price range. Buda is south of Austin but is still a way from being well developed (stores, etc), but it is quite cheap and has low crime.

Traffic coming in from any of the suburbs is going to be horrendous. Austin's highway system needs a major overhaul it is likely never to get.

You don't want to live in Round Rock. It's exactly the same as a Houston suburb, and is not even in the hill country, so it LOOKS like a Houston suburb. Austin does have some nice enough suburbs, but you can't go wrong with Far West, Hyde Park, etc. Austin is far better than Houston at least for urban neighborhoods.

With the exception of some areas in and around the Med Center and the Galleria most of it certified ghetto.
The only nice areas are generaly in the Suburbs. Katy and Sugarland to the west, The Woodlands/Conroe to the north and Pearland/Friendswood/Webster to the south. East of Houston is an industrial wasteland and almost as ghetto as the urban areas.
