no third world countries, but a few what I would class as second world countries, mostly former USSR countries who have just recently started to modernise to catch up with west europe

I'd say no. There are some poor countries, they've just entered EU last year. Poland and such. Why do you ask?

I agree. By the common definition.

Italy.
1. They're ruled by a dictator who removes power from any judge who questions his rule, the guy also happens to own all major TV stations/radio stations/newspapers, and there was evidence of corruption (but after the aforementioned judges were gone noone dared to bring that up anymore).

2. Rape is legal if the girl is wearing jeans, as 'those are so hard to remove from an unwilling person that it can't be rape' (Official ruling by a judge)

3. Catholic church and it's 3rd century ideas.

Ok, there is not that much poverty/hunger, but all the other things are there.

Bulgaria and some former yugoslavian an sovjet republics. Not 3rd world poor, but still very poor compaired to western countries.

Because everything got behind during the Sovjet regime.

Sounds like a lot of people aren't familiar with the origins of the term "third world." It's from cold war times. The first world is western europe and north America (but not Mexico) and Japan, the very-seldom used "second world" was the communist bloc, including NJDevil's Moldova. The third world was everyone else basically.

Obviously the scheme has stopped making much sense. Now third world is the only term left and is synonymous with poor. As others have suggested, it depends on how you define poor. Obviously the new European countries that are still recovering from communism are relatively poor. The general pattern is that the newer southern and eastern european countries start off poorer. When Portugal and Greece first joined the union they were poor-- I'm guessing they still are, relatively. But it would be a mistake to compare them to African countries for example.

According to the definition of Third World, Second World, First World,

Turkey is a First World country. Would you agree?

What about Greece? Third world? My definition is poor.

I don't think the 1, 2, 3 definition is great and Turkey is a good example of why it's outdated as are the Asian tigers. I think it would have been considered 3rd world in the past.

I would say Turkey in many aspects is to Europe what Mexico is to US.

Ukraine is currently moving toward first world, but lingers in the third world. Food sources are currently marginal, banks aren't to be trusted, housing is pretty awful for most, still a police state, semi-closed borders, very unequal distribution of goods and services, no doughnut shops. You try to run a police state without doughnut shops!

Many of the NIS are pulling out of some bad times under the Soviet and can qualify.

Many African countries haven't achieved third world yet. Some are fourth world in that there is nothing but death and dispair in abundance. They have plenty of that.

I would call Turkey marginal first world, depends on where you look. Greece is first world.

I would say Albania. they are bigtime backwards.

followed by ex- warsaw pact nations, they are still pretty backward but they aren't like albania.

Then ex-yugoslavia. when yugoslavia was united it was ahead of all the warsaw pact countries, generally. But a few wars, some embargos, and foreign nations sticking their thumbs where they don't belong tends to make things go bad.

How poor? I see third-world countries as widely lacking basic infrastructure. Potable water is scarce. There is little electricity outside the cities. Sanitation systems are rare, not even septic tanks. I do not think any European countries are that poor but I am not sure.

There are actually 4th and 5th World classifications now.

Essentially, the 4th and 5th world nations have nothing going for them, and are at the mercy of nature.

Some of my poli sci profs in college (and I went to an accredited university, btw ;)) made references to 4th and 5th world tiers back in the early '90s. Basically, with the fall of the USSR, the world needed to be reclassified, since the old nomenclature was no longer useful.

Basically,
1st = developed, industrialized
2nd = no longer exist. some say that the old Warsaw pact nations go here, since they are recovering from socialism)
3rd = developing
4th = not developing
5th = royally fvcked (nations like Chad.)

You can find a few articles on the subject by searching google.

It is not universally accepted, but the ideas are out there.
