We all know how much equipment becomes hanger racks. Are there any studies showing which types of machines actually get used the most by buyers?

Dont know, there's plenty of articles like this though:

Treadmill/Stationary bike/Rowing machine would be my top 3 picks for the big machine clothes racks, of course theres all the other stuff like tiny dumbells and the abdominizer type things that meet the same fate.

Or did you mean actually gets used the most as in they buy it and it dosent become a clothes rack?

Yes, that's what I'm asking.

What equipment gets used the most and doesn't become a clothes rack.

I would guess squat racks are the most used. Typically people that invest the money for a decent rack and barbell set, which if purchased new could easily cost more than $2000, rarely make the decision to drop that much cash just because they think their ass is fat. I don't know of any studies on the subject but I would say that anything fairly inexpensive(under $500) purchased by untrained individuals 30+ is the most likely to end up not being used.

I would say ones that sustain a long period of continuous use are probably racks.

I would say ones that get the most purchases and sporadic use (likely in the first few weeks of January) would be either a treadmill or an elliptical.

I have a nice weight set in the unfinished part of my basement. The funny part is I did not purchase it. It just appeared one day when my mom and step dad dropped it off as a garage sale purchase that they were thinking about reselling later. My basement is used to store a lot of their garage sale crap with my permission as it gets cleared out once a year. 5 or 6 years went by and finally several weeks back I started using it lol. I actually had to borrow some extra weights.
