Are there any stripped down versions of linux that allow just webbrowsing? I want something secure and uncrashable for a computer that will be in the lobby of a hotel for people to check their email....i just need something that most people wont be able to screw with?

Download redhat. In the installer, do "custom" use 'select packages individually'. Uncheck everything except KDE. Set automatic dependancies. install. Download Mozilla. Install. make a user who doesn't have write permission anywhere except maybe the mozilla cahce and cookies directories.

QNX

There was a demo that fit on a floppy that could access the Internet via NIC or modem.

Better in the respect that it's what most people are used to. I would probably go with the Win2K option.

There is Windows software you can get that will turn a computer into a kiosk that will restrict access to anything but the webbrowser, along with other features to protect users. Something like Surfnet or Netstop .

I really like Knoppix. You burn it to a cd and dont have to install it. Then it just boots up to Linux straight from the cd.

For those of you who have specified a windows option, Please recall that he mentioned something that was secure and would not crash. And I assume an OS that would not have to be rebooted. Windows 2000 would have a hard time to fill those needs. For you Windows might be something your more used to, but in a situation like he mentioned, I would steer away from Windows as much as possible.
