Trolling aside, you raise an interesting issue. Nickelback is HUGE by current standards, but would you be able to recognize the lead singer?
I wasn't implying otherwise sorry, just trying to change gears a bit. I think that bands who create amazing music and aren't an in your face archetype are far more interesting.
Unfortunately I'll have to disagree about MGMT after their latest album.
I've seen the YYY's a few times and Karen O just oozes the old time rockstar/punk lifestyle.
I saw Muse at Coachella and damn if they aren't rock stars. I'm not a fan but it seemed like the entire audience knew all the words.
I would say Beth Ditto, but not so much. She puts on a hell of a show (saw at Coachella too) but I see her more of an entertainer.
I fell asleep to MGMTs new album, but they were trendsetters - Phoenix, et el owe alot of their sound to MGMT.
how do you define "rock star?" I'd never throw Jay Z into that category.
Phoenix easily pre-dates MGMT as does Hot Chip.
The only thing MGMT has done is increased the ultra pretentious bullshit single serving music market. Their first album wasn't great but it was full of fun catchy dance tunes. IMO of course.
Never cared enough about Phoenix to check out their discography, but you're absolutely right- they came first. Wolfgang.. Phoenix just sounded a lot like MGMT's Oracle, which is a good album full of good hooks.. I never viewed them as ultra pretentious, and kinda thought Oracle was the opposite of pretentious (it was goofy to me in the same way The Scissor Sister's good album was). What I like about the Brooklyn scene is the return to fun and the dash of Americana, vs. what I view as pretentious post-Grunge/indie.
True, though indie/college radio rock has been around forever, I guess the business model just changed.
Yikes, by my definition I guess the Jonas Brothers are the last rock stars.. Luckily they're fading away, Justin Bieber taking up the job of making 9 year old girls we... Never mind.
No mention of Maynard/Tool yet? I'd say they qualify, even at the rate of two albums per decade.
Nope, sorry. I love some Tool/APC, but he just doesn't say 'rock star' to me. That's probably a good thing though because rock stars have an in your face LOOK AT ME attitude that I can't stand. Part of the reason I like Maynard is because of that.
Yeah, the thought of calling Jay Z a "rock star" made me LOL. The fact that anyone would even think of putting him in that category pretty much illustrates the idea that rock as a genre has morphed into something far less than what it once was.
Back in the day, true rock stars would have been people like:
David Lee Roth
Sammy Hagar
Axl Rose
Freddie Mercury
Ozzie Osbourne
Steven Tyler
*laughs* they were a fad that got popular and died in under a year
i'll be seeing Them Crooked Vultures May 16th @ Caesar's Windsor... 4th row center :awe:
What other Brooklyn area stuff are you digging right now?
