Are there any reviews comparing onboard audio (Realtek, CMedia, etc.) to Live!, Audigy, Santa Cruz??

I doubt it. The various combinations of codecs, controllers, and output circuitry among onboard solutions are so numerous as to make only comparisons of each individual board useful.

Typical Tom's Hardware car wreck. The

Yeah....more like a trainwreck really...that was just horrible. He does know that most of those could be used with Nforce and just be used as a DAC, right? Guess not.

There is no such thing as "Canterwood Onboard sound".

There can be remarkable variances in sound quality between various implmenetations of different boards. It really depends on the board and how the signal paths are done.

A soundchip can sound glorious in one board and like a steaming pile of dog doodoo in another.

What a waste of time:disgust:

The part on the first page where he confuses the driver with the hardware itself is pretty bad even for THG.

I just disabled my C-Media onboard sound & popped in my Sblive.

It does make a difference, gameplay in 1942 is smoother & sound is much better.

Whoever wrote the article is clearly not a native English speaker. Why don't you go ahead and post a review of something in German or Italian and let us rip your inability to write flawlessly in a secondary language.

Well (I may be wrong here), but if you're going to post the article on THG's english site, it should be corrected for grammatical and glaring errors.

It should be illegal to even have the Audigy 2 in the same room as those other audio solutions. It is in its
own league , no one can hang IMO.

That isn't a language issue. Neither is the misidentification the CM8738, the misguided warning about nForce's availability, or the failure to mention what controller the 650 was paired with.

But it was something that most of the people on this forum could at least pick one or two of those things up. Clearly, this piece needed some proof-reading. Not by anyone too qualified though, like most High School students. It would never make it to press.

Instead of just being obnoxious and ripping them. Why don't you post something constructive and list what you think is wrong and why so others will get the correct information?

I didn't read the whole article, only the intro and conclusion. If the NForce availability comment you're referring to is the one in the conclusion, then the article is correct.

Because quite frankly I'm fed up with all these tech sites and their attitudes. Anand, Tom, Kyle Bnnnett, they're all the same. God forbid they ever admit they made a mistake and fix something. Mistakes happen. I understand that. But not spending 10 minutes to fix them is unacceptable.

How is it correct? How many nForce2 boards besides the Chaintech disable the APU?

By Canterwood Onboard Sound I meant the AC-97 6 Channel found on most of the boards, such as the IC7-G. If i decided to use it, and a relatively fast processor and vid card, i wouldn't notice the extra CPU utilization, correct? Would it sound decent?

I think Anand takes a better attitude than most. I remember reading one on Tom's where they said, "As usual, we will give you another in depth review." That place has gotten a big head since I started reading it, and Dr. Pabst's editorials are ridiculous. I can't say that HOCP is much better, but a lot of times some of the smaller sites don't go into as much depth. Just my two cents on that.
As to the sound issue, I have an Abit AT7 max 2 and an MSI KT4V, both have their strong points, but I chose the Abit because of its better sound; the bass is 'there'. Both of these boards use the same RealTex ALC650 chip, but Abit worked some magic on theirs or something

Which brings us right back to my original post. :)
