are there any nvidia based cards that support hdmi audio?

Just a simple question. I prefer nvidia cards but the only cards I can find that support audio through hdmi are ati based cards.
 
nVidia supports audio through HDMI, but they do this via an spdif input on the card. So you need a soundcard with SPDIF out, then loop it into your videocard, and then it will output the audiosignal over HDMI, together with the image.
 
Not all Nvidia have this feature. It's really up to the board partners if they wish to provide the SPDIF passthrough connector and also if the card you're considering comes supplied with the SPDIF passthrough cable. Beware for these specifics whe shopping for your card. Most new mid range cards do come with this feature, but I just didn't want you to assume they ALL supported it.
Shop with attention to this.

Given all the problems people have posted about getting the ATI audio chip to work reliably it's a pretty good solution.

Depending on the card, it may only come with an internal cable to hook to the digital out pins of your motherboard or soundcard, or it may also come with a coax-to-pins adapter to hook to an RCA/coax connector.

Many cards have no connector or no cable, so always look at the pictures at newegg. The digital passthrough pins usually are at the top of the card next to the bracket.

Yup. I use a 9800GTX+ in the living room PC. Using HDMI with SPDIF audio passthrough cable from the onboard motherboard SPDIF audio header right into the top of the video card. It's really very simple and uses the hi-def audio chip that came with the mobo. The only thing you really need to do after that, is to choose SPDIF out in your audio software preferences. Otherwise, you won't hear a thing. Except through your PC speakers if you have them hooked up.

Unless you want Blu-Ray playback, of course.

Nvidia and ATI had better get this stuff straightened out by the next generation.
