Netzero is cracking down on DUNners and banner-cracks. As fast as you see the information go up, the "fix" is broken.
Juno is terminating (with extreme prejudice, in some cases, apparently) those who haven't d/l'd their latest software (the one with the "all your idle cycles are belong to us" code built-in) and/or who have been DUNning the system. Even the "light" users (the $9.95/month people) are being severely restricted in access time and time of day, and the "upgrade" being offered to some of those folks is beyond silly ("You've been identified as a heavy user; pay $29.95/month if you want to continue to use the service" - yeah, right).
Amex has apparently put a hold on adding new subscribers to their free ISP setup, according to the latest posts in alt.internet.free-services, and has not indicated if they will open up registrations again, or even if they will continue to support it.
AT&T still has their banner setup, but is no longer pushing it, instead favoring the $7.95 plan (which is just another version of the same thing, only for a little more money).
Winfire (FreeDSL) is dead.
Looks like TANSTAAFL is working as advertised, folks.
Using your monthly pocket change for ISP service is probably not a bad idea.
