Are there any motherboards that support NVMe? Will there be backward compatability?

If I understand this correctly, NVMe drives can have PCIe, SATA or M.2 interfaces. Without BIOS support, these drives will not be bootable. Without BIOS support, NVMe drives will work as additional storage only.

Does this sound right?

Will there be BIOS updates for existing motherboards or do you also need the hardware support?

I'm not sure how integrated with the CPU/chipset this interface will be, but if it simply needs access to a X # of PCI-E lanes like a M.2, then mobo manu's can add it to any motherboard they so wish, and add BIOS support.

NVMe is just a software protocol like AHCI. It doesn't need specific hardware support, the sticky part is that it needs UEFI support to be able to boot an NVMe drive. Boards with an old fashion BIOS will also be unable to boot an NVMe drive.

You also need Windows 8.1 to enable OS support.
