because after reading for 2 days, i am still slightly confused at what i can and cant use. Are all nvidia 680i SLI boards a lost cause? 780i will work, but will 750i? p35's seem to work, but need a bios update, which is not an option.

It also needs to work with my OCZ DDR2
* 800MHz DDR2
* CL 5-4-4-15
* (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
* Available in 4GB (2x2048) Dual Channel Kits
* Unbuffered
* Nvidia XTC* Heatspreader
* OCZ Lifetime Warranty
* 2.1 Volts
* 240 Pin DIMM

Special Features

* 2.2V EVP**
* EPP-Ready

and my 8800GT.

Out of curiosity, why is a BIOS update not an option for you?

If you buy a board that can't boot with an unsupported CPU, you need a supported CPU to flash the board. Otherwise, how do you expect to update the BIOS if it can't boot?

Hopefully stores will list which boards are Penryn-ready out of the box, otherwise this could turn into an RMA-fest.

I asked a question prior to this... for Maximus formula support for QX9650... and ppl in this forum said that the CPU would be fine for a BIOS update from DOS and the QX9650 can be detected and used to complete this task and then proceed with any further installations I want....

for p35s - MSI supports 45nm CPUs (enough to boot) with their 1.4 bios. The Neo2 is new enough where it ships with 1.4 I think the new platinum reversion 1.1 also is new enough to ship with 1.4 Not sure about any of the others.

X38 should not be a problem no matter whos it is, they are all new enough where they should all be 45nm compatible out of the box.

I would think if you'e buying a new board the manufacturers are going to ship them with updated bios if they are being advertised as supporting this chip.
