what programs are there for pocketPC that give directions and maps?? (I dont want to buy the GPS locator), just want the maps and directions like mapquest
Since Mapquest is web-based, you could just use your PDA ( if it has WiFi ) to access the net just as you would on your PC ( but with a much smaller screen ). Another option would be to use Mapquest on your PC to plot your trip and save the web pages. You could then transfer those HTML documents to your PDA for viewing with PocketIE. That would be the cost-free option.
The option I used before actually getting a Bluetooth GPS nav. system ( with TomTom Navigator ) was to use Microsoft Streets & Trips ( or AutoRoute for Europe ). The desktop version of MS S&T comes with a PocketPC version. Since I already owned the desktop version, this was a cost-free option for me. The only problem I have with MS S&T is the lack of map updates. It is OK for getting to/from major places but expect some missing streets, etc. in areas where there is rapid growth. It seems that the included maps are around 18 months to 2 years old. I hear that the Pharos Ostia software is pretty good BUT it is 3 times the cost of the MS software.
Almost every GPS maker sells its software as a stand-alone product with most being over $100. You will have to decide on a price point you are comfortable with.
Since maps, etc. take up a lot of memory, you will probably want to get a speedy card reader for your PC and a Secure Digital or Compact Flash card for your PDA. I would say in the 512MB to 1GB size.
