I'm looking for a desktop-replacment laptop with the following specs:

Drives:
DVDr, dual-layer
3.5" Floppy (optional, but I want it if possible)
Card reader with CompactFlash and SecureDigital slots
Hard drive - doesn't matter, as I want to replace it with a 60gb 7200rpm 2.5" Hitachi hard drive

Ports:
VGA out (DVI if possible)
multiple USB 2.0
at least one Firewire port
56k modem
10/100 ethernet (gigabit would be cool too!)
54g wireless (108mbps would be better, or if it can be upgraded internally)
Bluetooth

Screen:
15.4" widescreen (1080i, 1920 x 1200 would be cool) - Sony Xbrite if possible (or whatever is the best screen)

System stuff:
Athlon 64 (3700+ with 1mb cache would be ideal)
ram - doesn't matter, as long as I can upgrade to 2 gigs of ddr (333 okay, 400 better)
vram - 128mb minimum, 256 would be ideal
Windows XP Pro (I'll reinstall and Ghost it with my stuff anyway)

I've been looking at eMachines m68xx and Compaq R3000 series in particular. There will have to be a few trade-offs, but oh well. I've seen the eMachines screen in person and I'm not very impressed. I've heard that Compaq uses the Sony Xbrite technology or something similar, anyone know what the deal is with this?

So, are there any laptops on the market like this?

I have never seen a lappy with those specs runnin an AMD chip. Your best bet wouldbe to at least lower the Dual layer support for now... This is the only one i have seen with ddr400 right now but then was just lookin again 4 u. Good luck...

Possibly list your desired weight requirements and battery life?

The Mitac 8355 comes to mind, but do not believe a flash media reader is integrated (could always be purchased as a stand alone device, however). Excellent machine, and available from a number of resellers.

However, the NP4750 does have a built-in media reader (and a CMOS integrated camera as well, if memory serves). Cannot recall offhand, but believe the highest processor currently offered in the NP4750 is the 64-bit variety of the 3400+. Slightly lower screen resolution (WSXGA+ 1680x1050), DL DVD+/-RW available, 2048MB ram possible, most the ports listed above (USB 2.0, IEEE1394a, see note below regarding DVI), and all the connectivity options listed above (56K, 10/100/1000, 802.11g, Bluetooth). Available from a number of resellers as well, one of which is this one. Unfortunately, no DVI out (only SVGA out). The NP8790 has DVI out (as did the now phased-out NP8890), but is a P4 based machine.

There are a number of resellers that offer various makes and models of machines without operating systems. This may prove useful for you, considering the specifications you list above.

Will hopefully return to this thread later with a few more suggestions, once the weight and battery life desires are addressed.

The R3000 I spec'ed out online was pretty dang close :)

yeah, like I said, there will be trade-offs, so if there's no dual-layer for now, that's fine.

battery life, eh, like 2 hours. I'll be around power jacks a lot. Weight, I don't care. Up to 15 lbs cover it? :D

ya know...isn't 1920x1200 too small for a 15.4" screen? It'd be cool to have 1080i, but...I want to be able to read stuff. I run my 21" CRT at 1280x1024 because it's really comfortable for my eyes there. What would you guys recommend?

Edit: The 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen(1280x800) looks like it might be a good option...I've heard it's basically the same technology as the Sony Xbrite screen. I'm looking at Compaq's configure page.

The only thing that really stinks about the Compaq, aside from the lack of CF slot, is that it has a GeForce card in it, and it's only 64 megs.

Look @ the HP version of that Compaq, might have some better options. Also look at the HP/Compaq business line models.
