after a hellish day at work today where I was stuck in an empty room making cables with nothing to listen to / read / watch, I've decided I need to go out and buy an mp3 player this weekend.

I definitely need something that's more than 10 gigs... iPods seem to be the most popular, but is there anything out there that's better for the money in terms of high-capacity mp3 players? everything seems to have video on it nowadays, but really, I'll only be using it for mp3's. radio / video are not high on my feature priority list.

You'd be surprised how handy teh video feature is. You can watch TV shows you've missed anywhere. Makes for a good lunch break distraction =)

Dont forget ipods offer accessories for almost anything. most other players only offer the most basic of accessories

Yes there was a guy that killed a nano last year by throwing it up in the air. ;)

consider this:

the 20gb 4th gen ipod, without a color screen, sold for $299
the 30gb 5th gen ipod, with color screen, displays video, which is also much thinner, goes for ~$280 from amazon.com

nobody is holding a gun on your head to watch videos on them. the ipod is a bargain when compared to the rest of the competition, in terms of ease of use, stability, durability, and price.

however, a custom EQ would make it much much better. that function is overlooked by the mainstream of people who don't own an ipod for music, so apple doesn't care to support it either.

I think theres firmware flashes that allows for custom EQ settings right?

I got the 2 of the 1 gig versions for my parents. They have loved it. My father immidiately took all his fav cds and encoded the songs. He listens to the radio and songs while he works and sometimes even records his favorite show (Science Friday @BBC). Unfortunately, I don't think it fits the OPs requirements though it is better than the shuffle from my experience.

There isn't any iPod killers out, at least yet. However, there might be players that suit your needs better.

You might look into that new Creative model that competes with the iPod with video. I think it'd be cool to put movies on it, as I listen to a movie as much as watch it if I've seen it enough.

I think Apple makes better stuff than Creative. You can get a refurbished (non-video) ipod with 20GB on the Apple website. It would have a one-year warranty.

Not currently it would seem. But as cell phones continue to evolve into more than just phones I fully expect you'll see more and more people using their phone to fulfill the role the Ipod currently fills.

Creative Zen Sleek (if you want radio) or Zen Touch...sorry, but I like em better than the Ipods. Longer battery life, muuuuuch longer.

According to the official site, Rockbox does this:

* Support for MP3, Ogg Vorbis, AC3, AAC, Musepack, AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, Shorten, WAV, and Wavpack Sound Codecs
* Gapless Playback
* 5 Band Parametric Equalizer
* High Resolution Volume Control, 82 levels
* Abilty to create your own theme or use one of these.
* Crossfade, Crossfeed, and Replay Gain
* Picture and text viewing
* Calendar
* Doom
* Real Time Clock on the player's that have the necessary hardware
* Tag Database
* Unicode Support
* On The Fly Playlists
* Voice Interface, and Multilingual Interface
* Many Plugins and Games to enhance Rockbox even further.
* Open Source, so Rockbox is constantly improved.

I've heard a lot of good things about it, and I am looking forward to installing it if I buy a compatible player.

To me, the biggest selling point for the iPod was how thin it was.

I bought the Creative Zen Vision M and returned it the next day for the iPod.
