I played recently with a $100 IP camera from Amazon. What I hated about it is that it requires a client running on another PC to continual interact with it and perform simple tasks like motion detection and FTP sending. I can't believe there isn't an IP camera that can do all this itself--use a client to logon to it and set up what you want, but then disconnect and let it do its thing. Latency would be better and performance probably better and more reliable.
I googled but found nothing. Does this exist or maybe it does but is really expensive?
EDIT: Found it, Mobotix cameras do this. I'm not sure they can specifically go to FTP, but their processing is all on-board and they can write to network drives, so getting that up to FTP would be easy enough. Unfortunately these things are a thousand bucks from what I can tell, but the $100 camera I had was more a toy than anything else. Can't do any real automated surveillance with it if you need reliability.
