What's your setup?
I heard the issues pertain more to people with Via chipsets.

Phuz, I have a VIA chipset mainboard. It's a VIA Apollo Pro133A chipset Tyan S1854 Trinity 400 Pentium III mainboard. I run Windows 2000 Pro SP 1 with the ACPI HAL. I use the Aureal Vortex 8830 drivers that Win2K automatically installs for the MX300 sound card. The MX300 sound card works great for me.

Here is what MS says to do.... this is from the MW4 readme..... It applies to MW4 but I assume also Win2K in general.

<< Vortex 2 audio chipset (Turtle Beach Montego II, Diamond Monster Sound MX-300) compatibility with Windows 2000: You may experience choppy playback of audio during the installation of MechWarrior: Vengeance as well as other anomalies or even lock-ups in the game. The original manufacturer of the Vortex 2 chipset, Aureal Semiconductor, has gone out of business. No driver updates are available for Vortex 2-based sound cards running on Windows 2000, other than the generic Vortex 2 driver included with Windows 2000. Contact your hardware manufacturer for updated drivers. For reference drivers, visit <http://support.a3d.com/>.
Alternatively, try the following solution:
1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Multimedia, and then click the Audio tab.
3. Under Playback, click Advanced Properties, and then click the Performance tab.
4. Drag the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left by 2 settings, and then click OK.

there arent any drivers around, and dont bother talking to tech support at Diamond. my mx300 works fine in win2k even with quad speaker support. unreal and quake sound just as good as they do in 98 or Me.

I don't get it!
What would happen is my sound would cut out after running q3, or booting icq, but I'd be able to use it for one thing.. like an hour of winamp, but then the next sound, BAM. No sound till restart..

I don't know what happen to you, but there are couple things you can do.

1) remove the existing driver and reinstall it.
2) get the newest service pack for Windows 2000.

Try these and see what happen. If it still the same, try another sound card. Might be something short with your card.

What's wrong with Windows 2000 build-in driver? Works fine with me. Why bother to look for the others?

If I remember correctly, the built-in drivers are only basic drivers that do not take advantage of the full capabilities of the Vortex2 chipset. As it looks now, you will never be able to get full support of all the capabilities of the Vortex2 or any of Aureal's chipsets in Win2k. The built in drivers get only basic sound, not true 3D sound with all the bells and whistles that you would get under Win98. Don't grill me if I am wrong (though I believe I am correct), just speaking of my experiences and from what I read over at vortexofsound.

I decided to keep Win2k over the Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla, so I upgraded to the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I decided all the time I was spending on getting all the features of the Vortex 2 in Win2k wasn't worth the trouble.

So far, the Santa Cruz has worked wonderfully in Win2k, and I don't have to deal with Creatives crap. (Liveware, new cards instead of upgrades to existing ones, etc...)
