Are there any good Voip services out there?

I've been contemplating dropping my land-line and getting voip. After reading reviews for a day all I can say is this stuff doesn't seem ready for prime-time.

It seems they all have numerous instances of being unable/unwilling to solve customer problems.

Is there anything out there that people are for the most part happy with?

vonage starts out pretty nice but the service starts to deterior rate.

That's atleast what happened to me.

Now I don't even have a home phone. Having a cell phone works just fine

You could probably get more range from a wireless phone hooked to the phone modem.

If that's what you meant.

Viatalk thus far has been pretty good. You get a lot of added features as well that can be handy. They have pretty much the same deal as Sunrocket. Support is decent.

I have nothing but good experience using Vonage over the past couple years. I have even taken my VOIP box and phone with me to hotels that have free high speed and used it there, although the upload on some of these "high speed" connections suck. I really don't have a single complaint about Vonage, and the voice quality is awesome with my Uniden cordless. If your internet connection is less than reliable though, you may want to reconsider. I'm lucky that my Adelphia connection hasn't been out in almost a couple years...although, they just got absorbed by Comcast...so it will probably go downhill...

I've been experimenting with voip for about three days now. I bought a USB phone, RADIAN RST103 Handheld USB Phone from Newegg for $41.99. I'm using a Skype account which means phone calls are free through the end of the year. If you want to get incoming calls you can subscribe to Skype out. Prices are as follows: $38 a year for Skype out; $20 a year for voicemail. Wow that would be great to pay those prices for a phone.

This is my experience so far: I connected with people across the US, sometimes the connection is great this is about 20% of the time. Other times it is quite poor. When I call someone they often ask if the videoconferencing is OK. I say yes but I do not have a WebCam so from my end it is strictly audio. The videoconferencing I've seen is good, I mean the video is not jerky but rather smooth rolling frames. I mentioned the videoconferencing because perhaps a smarter purchase would be a headset and a WebCam. I blame the poor performance of my phone due to my inexperience using it.

Has anyone else had good luck with Skype?

Not only is it ready for prime time, it IS prime time. Theres over a million people using VOIP of some flavor or another. VoIP is here and its coming on strong.

We use Optimum Online's VOIP service, and its freakin great. Low price, and you get all the additional options of a regular phone line (caller ID, call waiting, voicemail, etc) for free. Only time it sucks is when the power is out or the internet is down. It doesnt happen often, but we have our basic (cheapest) landline possible for a backup as well as cell phones for when this happens. Its great.

My Vonage has been rock solid so far, 3 years. My internet (Cablevision) and my power are both intensely reliable also.

I back it up with two cell phones (personal & business), and I keep thinking I should put in the cheapest land line in case of major emergency, but I haven't gotten around to it.

A friend of mine has voip with Time-Warner. He has problems with it all the time. Calls will not go through to him and calls get disconnected all the time.

Since someone bumped this, let me say I decided to go with sunrocket and have had not a single problem for 2 months. Ported my old number too.
