Are there any good/reliable non-Apple music sites?

I bought a creative iRiver years ago but it's a pain to get new music on it. I either have to go the illegal route or download from itunes and listen to it on my gf's ipod. should I just get an ipod an be over with it? I'm afraid if I go that route, the technophile in me will lead me to the 80GB or 160GB models, overkill for someone who only has 4GB of music now.
