Are there any good camcorders with built in hard drives

Ummm...I believe that there is one out from either Toshiba or Panasonic but I can't remember the model. I'll Google it and get back to you.

[EDIT] The one I was thinking of is the JVC Everio G. It's a little on the pricey side ($900 and their cheapest HDD camcorder) but it got good reviews. It has a 20GB hard drive, the bigger HDD models will run you about $1200.

No. If you read the reviews of the JVC ones the picture quality SUCKS and since they record in MPEG2 format it is very difficult to edit the video.

no such thing as a good camcorder with built in hard drive. it'll be atlast 3 generations before it gets good. I have the 1st gen JVC with the removable 4 gig microdrive. Can't record in low light, battery life is only 1 hour, and it gets hot after recording for an hour. Picture quality is amazing in good lighting though, but the picture option sucks since the pictures always come out crap, best you can hope for is an OK picture. it also takes 8 seconds to boot up and shuts down after a few minutes of not recording.

the thing it really needs is a way to shut off the lcd when it isn't in use. the would increase battery life by a good amount.

I can't figure out why they have room to put dvd recorders in camcorders they can't slap on a low power notebook drive, maybe apple has a tight hold on supply 😛
