Are there any games now that are similar to the original Syndicate, X-Com or Jagged A

It's been a really long time since I've seen any games that have really excited me. I've been a gamer since the Commodore 64 and at times I wonder if I'm outgrowing video games at 39, but yet I'm constantly looking to see what new games are being released. The only thing that kind of captures my interest these days are the independent games, games like Braid or Bastion. It's kind of weird that with video games being such a huge market these days, it's bizarre that I find less games I'm interested in playing than a decade or two ago. But I don't want to turn this into a industry bashing thread. I'd like to find some recent games kind of made in the tradition of the old school games.

Just look for games that are the opposite of the x-com and syndicate remakes and you'll be pretty close...

I can't think of any offhand. The only strategy games I've really liked recently were Starcraft 2 and Shogun 2 both of which are kind of retro in style, but obviously nothing like the listed titles.

I quite liked Freedom Force (not quite the same but had some similar elements). It is older and often on sale on Steam (i think there is a demo too)

I tried Frozen Synapse after seeing recommendations in threads like this, but the plan and go system felt like it shoe horned turns into real time gameplay, making the least interesting aspects of both styles stand out. Couldn't stand it personally.

I'll add another tally for Xenonauts however, looks great so far.

http://www.deadstate.doublebearproductions.com/ Dead State is a post apocalypse zombie survival game based on seemingly very similar gameplay as Jagged Alliance.

Silent Storm is pretty much a JA clone but it's not entirely recent, however it's well regarded. Unfortunately hard to find now a days though.

Then even older is Fallout Tactics, if you missed it back then I'd say it's worth checking out, and the graphics still hold up alright, IMO.
