Are there any faster CD-RW drives coming out?

I was thinking about picking up a new Lite-On 52x24 for the faster rewritable burning (Current is 12x), but I heard Lite-On is coming out with a 52x32x speed drive, has anyone heard about that, or know when it's gonna come out?

As far as I've read, the drives have hit the speed barrier. Barring a "TrueX" type solution, or another way to increase the number of read mechanisms, the rotational speeds won't get any higher, so neither will the speeds.

I think this is the last gasp for the CD-RWs before they start to drop in price abysmally and DVD-R/RW's start their decent to reasonable price points.

what, 2.5 minutes a burn isn't good enough for you! lol
i believe if the CD starts spinnig faster than 52X it will crack.. which is why normal CD rom drives do not go past 52X.... or something liek that.

RW speeds, the poster wants. i thought the same as you, then realized he wants RW speeds. I haven't found anything yet which bumps the speed of RWs. If they do, good luck finding media for it.

You mean to say that we'll never hit anything under 2.5 minutes????? BTW 52x cd-r's burn in 2.5 minutes? my 48x does it in 5 minutes, is there something wrong?

what would you need faster RW's for ? the fastest RW discs that i've seen are only rated at 10X.

Sadly RW disks haven't caught on. Very few people need to backup data for years - play their illegal copied games for years - play the same old music for years, etc. Instead most people need a cd for just a few months - until they backup again, until they finish the game, until they get tired of that music and move on to newer stuff. So CDRWs are perfect. You can buy one RW disk and use it many, many times - saving yourself a big wad of cash. Ever get a coaster with a CDR? With a CDRW you just burn it again without a problem. Thus CDRWs are the perfect thing for most people. Unfortunately no company can make fast RW burn speeds or fast RW disks. That is why we are wanting fast RW speeds.

Well, 24x CD-RW media is already out there, and the current max is 24x, so I don't see how the media isn't matching the drive speeds.

Anyway, thanks for the replies. I guess I'll just stick with a 24x rewritable :)

Tip of the day: Wanna DE-crease your burn times with your 16x and higher CD-RW drive? Get more RAM. It's been proven ( by me!) that increasing from 128mb of RAM to 256 cuts burn time by at least 1:30 seconds. And for the big cut get at least 512mb, and your burn times will be cut in half!!!!
