Are there any electronic bikes that are actually worth buying?

The reason I ask is because I work about 2 miles from home and I am currently riding to work in the sweating swiltering heat. I know I get laughed at, but the big problem is that it sucks getting to work drenched in sweat and having to change, etc.

I am thinking of buying a car in August but if there are any electric bikes that are not stupidly expensive and at least mildly fast I would consider one. Am I living in fantasy land?

Problem with a motorcycle is that I'll end up driving too fast and think I'm part of traffic. Motorcycles are frigging dangerous :)

Hmm, these are a tad pricey but I shouldn't really be surprised - I found a conversion kit for $519. 20 mile range isn't bad, but I'd rather it did 30 mph for 5 miles instead :) I'd really need to test one before comitting because I weigh about 185 lbs and I'd need to see how it does up a hill.

Motorcycles are part of traffic. IMO anybody that would rather spend $900 on an electric bike that can do 20mph is crazy, when they could get a 5 year old decent motorcycle that could go MUCH faster then that. I ride my motorcycle about 100 miles a week and gas costs me about $3-$4.

Motorcycles require insurance, a driver's license, etc.

Electric bikes are exempt from those things, & charge off household power.

More importantly motorcycles are dangerous as hell cause if somebody is drinking coffee and hits you, say goodbye. With a bike I stick to the side basically minding my own business.

Yeah you got a point.

But sometimes to really live, you needn't worry about those things. It's just a risk i'm willing to take.

Oh believe me I've literally had dreams about owning a motorcycle (few nights ago I got a new speed bike as I slept), but my wife has said its not gonna happen and I think my mother would die as well :)

I just have too little faith in other drivers...I suppose it depends on the area as well. Fairly low-traffic roads its much safer.

Ouch.

My motorcycle comes before any woman...well atleast until I have a woman that is ;). But if she made me choose I still would keep the motorcycle and look for the next woman (cause chicks digs motorcycle ;)).

My buddy just mounted at 42cc weed eater engine to a mountian bike.
He bought the engine used for $20 and got somebody to build a little frame for it. He gets about 150mpg and it will do 35mph top speed.
It was really easy and works really good!
I'd look into that.
Although its sounds like a little bee going by you :)

Around here it is.
Saskatchewan
He got it plated, the law here is IF it is under 100cc you don't need fenders, signals or brake lights.
Any thing over 100cc needs those things, required to wear a helmet etc. As it is he just wears a bicycle helmet.
Hes had it running about two weeks now and hasn't been pulled over yet
:D
Its has a tank about a quart big 800ml can go about 35 miles a tank.

OK I'm jealous. Not only is that much cheaper than electric but its also faster!

That thing is a mad commuting machine. I'm kinda surprised more people don't do stuff like that...some company should start selling weed eater bikes (I know some sell the scooters but who wants a scooter?).

Yeah hes had a lot of comments so far !!
Thats exactly waht he made it for commuting.
He has lotsa gas guzzling Guzzling vehicles
89 Pathfinder
95 Civic
98 Chev Z71 truck
00 Honda minivan
So he figured in one week he paid for it in gas and parking at the University "where he works"
Lots have asked him to build them one and he says nah you could get em to sign all the waivers in the world somebody would crash and sue.
But he has no problem letting you copy his design. Maybe I'll get out the digi cam and post some pics. . . .
