Are there any drawbacks to an Optical Mouse?

It's time for me to get a new mouse. Should I get an optical mouse?

I don't play many games (I heard that the mouse doesn't work well with quick movements).

Are there any reasons I should stick with a tried and true MS wheel mouse and not go the optical route?

If you are not a "flick" shooter, then you'll be fine. Just make sure that you go to a Best Buy or similar store to try the feel of the mouse to make sure you like it.

I was an old intellimouse user, and my old mouse had a "gritty" texture to the plastic. The intellimouse optical, the $30 dollar one, has a smooth texture, and I hate it. :(

I ended up buying a Logitech to take it's place.

I've had 2 optical mice, never been completely satisfied with either of them. My first one was the Intellieye Explorer. It was extremely picky about the surface it was one. Taking it to lans was a complete pain in the ass if I wasn't setup on a table, the mouse wouldn't read the surface right (usually a shiny book or something) and it would go in all sorts of crazy directions. While playing Counterstrike, it did it to me in the middle of a game and I got so pissed that I punched it as hard as I could. It doesn't work anymore >=)

Second one I got was the Logitech Mouseman Optical +. The bigger of the 2 that Logitech. It was much cheaper, feels smoother, and damn, the blue light kicks ass! Keeps me up at night sometimes. I think its a much better mouse than the Explorer and it doesn't hog up my resources like the intellipoint software did.

Just my 2 cents =)

ROFLMAO!!!

I picked up the Logitech Wheelmouse optical (super cheap, nice mouse) but returned it for the Mouseman Wheel Optical. They put the thumb button where it should be, unlike the Microsoft mice, and that pretty blue light is just the swankiest thing ever.

Love the opticals. Just try before you keep/buy.

You basically have 3 choises

1 cheap wheelmouse
2 Optical mouse
3 wireless mouse

I have a MS Intelli Explorer, and it took a bit of getting used to in games. It not responding to quick movements only happens with me if I move it so fast (as fast I can by hitting it)in a way that nobody moves in a game. A real disadvantage is that it doesn`t work if you lift it off your desk and you expect the ball to roll a bit longer (so that you still move, but you don`t).And it is expensive.

The wireless are heavy (due to battery).

I think that it is best if you just triy some in a shop.

I'm starting to think that the Logitech opticals are better than the MS ones. I've been using the Explorer for almost a year now (at the time, these were the only opticals availible), and I've found that it's just too big and to compensate, I hold the mouse improperly. It's probably doing some damage to my hands...

The new MS optical mice looks like it is a better fit in terms of size for me. I'll check out the Logitech ones too, and the blue lights look pretty cool.

i love my intellimouse explorer!
love it
love it
love it
love it
but it doesnt work on reflective surfaces and is for big right handed people. Unless you're a hardcore mfer you wont notice any "stuttering" like people say they get... mine just rocks hard, whether fragging or playing in photoshop.
BUY ONE! you'll love it too!

I don't know why some people say that opticals aren't that fast in games. I get really good response times in Q3. Enough to allow me to take 3 nightmare bots :)
