Are there any downside to using generic ink for printers?

I am planning to buy some generic ink for my canon printer because it is cheap. I am planning on using generic ink mainly for text printing. My question is will it damage the printer or will it clog anything? I know that the quality is not as great as the canon ink but it will be alright for text printing ( I guess).

The downside is that it voids your warranty. If that is not an issue, enjoy! I did it for years with a Canon Bubblejet - but the printhead eventually clogged. Not due to refill ink, but due to design.

The biggest enemy of ink jets is long term inactivity.

It doesn't void the warranty unless the ink itself is proven to damage the printer.

Just keep the old carts in case you have to send it in.

Generic ink varies in quality (some is as good as factory) but in general it's pretty good although in some cases not up to factory specs. Canon's magenta for instance is patented so generic may not be quite as good...

OTOH, I use nothing but generic ink in my canons. Either made by Repeat-o-type or formulabs (kimberly clark) in the USA. I'd say it better than the ink you get in chinese made generic carts..

Thanks corky-g, I guess I will have no problems using generic inks then.
How will canon know if you used generic ink? Does anyone know how long the warranty for a canon printer? Thanks

One more time. When you send in a printer for repair they nearly always ask you send it in with the carts in it. So save and seal your original carts.

Thanks Macro2, I will be sure to save the cartrige. I am so happy that generic cost so cheap. I hate HP printers, their ink cost an arm and a leg!!!

Never had a problem using generic ink even when printer was under warranty, ironically I had one Epson printer go faulty while using Epson original ink carts under warranty.

Btw been using generic ink carts with my Canon i865(good quality generic ink carts) since the 2nd month from new,I do a lot of printing and never had any blocked print heads yet, infact never even had to run the head cleaning process manually yet.

How will canon know if you used generic ink? Does anyone know how long the warranty for a canon printer? Thanks

I believe it`s one year with option to extend it for an extra payment, that`s what I had with my Canon i865 printer.

I think HP included the printhead with their cartridges, so that might explain part of the higher costs.

I bought ink carts for my Canon i850 from Megatoners. They just came in the mail today, as a matter of fact! 🙂

I got 2 of each color and 2 blacks for less than the cost of ONE cart.

when you say generic ink you mean cheap ink refill right? hmm which means it can get quite sloppy. I spilled it all over the floor and my hands also had ink on it as well. quite a bit of hassle and i dont print all that much anyway.

What damage could exist? There are two different ways these are made. Some manufactures the cartridge has the print head built in (like HP and lexmark). Some cartridges are only tanks and the printer has a separate printhead. With some aftermarket ink the printheads will clog up. Also the equipment used and the process used is important. The worst damage will happen to the printhead which in most cases is the cartridge itself. Epson printers are bad for the printhead getting clogged even with oem inks. Espon have to been ran constantly as letting the printer set for a week will sometime render the print head useless.

Printer Warranty? As long as the inkjet printer is not damaged due to the aftermarket cartridges the manufacter CANNOT void your warranty. Some say they will but it is in fact illegal for them to say that although the law does not reconized what they are doing due to uneducation about the industry. It is only a scare tactic to get you to buy only their consumables so that they can control the entire market.

It the quality of aftermarket inks good? Unfortunately I must say the inkjet remanufacturing industry is not very good. They are only a few good manufactures. Most have a 20 to 50 percent defect rate and only a few have a good 1 to 2 percent defect rate. It anyone wants to find a good ink I could tell you where to get it. Understand that I do not manufacture inkjet cartridges and only sell retail as I am not trying to solicitit here. I can tell you the manufacture though. I have try just about all of them and it is terrible. There are testing standard being developed right now to help produce better product. It will help to make each manufacture either do it right or not do it at all.

One Note: Most of the problems are with cartridges that have built in printheads. Most of the tank cartridges will work without problems. Also you could refill yourself at home, but becare that not all inks are good an that definetly inks are not compatible will all types. If you refill yourself besure to refill it BEFORE it runs out. This will help prevent the printhead from drying out.

I am not an expert of inkjet technology, I am an expert in the eletrophotographic process of laser cartridges. The toner cartridge industry does well and there are repeatable test standards in place to qualify components and to benchmark against oem cartridges for consumer information. When buying laser cartridges ask if they can provide you with ASTM F 1856 and ASTM 2036 documentation. If they don't beware.
