i was going to mention the longest day book. stephen ambrose has a popular book on d day as well:

they had a bunch of good shows on d day on public television (nova,..) this month as well. also i wrote a report on d day in 7th grade, i would highly recommend that account as well
Nova episode is free to watch and quality programming as usual. Best show on the tube IMO.
Start with The Longest Day
Decision in Normandy is a good historical account of D Day (its preparation & aftermath too). Kind of tedious in places to read but has all of the nuts & bolts.
Currahee is by far my favorite first person combat memoir. It details the exploits of a member of the 101st airborne during D Day.
Germany was already defeated by June 1944. D-Day wasn't about stopping Germany...it was about stopping Russia.
