Are there any browsers which put controls on the left panel?

I hate widescreen.

So, I'm trying to maximize the vertical space on my browser.

One area that might make sense is to move the bookmarks as well as the back/forward/address bar buttons onto a left or right hand column, freeing that space for vertical display of webpages.

Possible? Any browsers do this?

You should be able to work with Firefox and Opera. I don't use stuff on the sides, so no specific recommendations, but both browsers are highly configurable, both stock, and with addons.

I'm not quite sure what sorta browser customization you're looking for but go here & look for screenshots of listed browsers, among the major ones firefox has the most options you can get out of any of'em.

Yeah the wide screen hype is idiotic for web browsing. 16:10 worked ok but 16:9 is just annoying.

The first thing is to but the windows task bar to the side (I prefer right). You will get used to it very quickly and it saves some pixels vertically, in all applications.

For firefox, use the "new" layout without menubar, and no add-on bar at bottom. If you don't mind, tabs on top (I personally hate that).

Maybe try

Nav Bar on Title Bar FF add-on:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en/firefox/addon/nav-bar-on-title-bar/

saves you another 10 pixels or so.

Again, consider a rotatable monitor, and set it in Portrait mode. That will give you 9x16 aspect ration instead of 16x9. That gives you a hardware fix that works with any browser to minimize vertical scrolling and mximize vertical space.
