Are there any alternatives to Intel and AMD on the desktop?

Alpha is long dead; SGI and MIPS is no more; HP will soon stop selling PA-RISC workstations (if they haven't already); IBM doesn't have any Power5 workstations, which probably means they won't have any Power6 workstations either; PowerPC seems to be confined to the embedded market and the console market now that Apple is using chips from intel; and Sun just announced recently that they'll be selling workstations that use Intel processors, which probably means that SPARC workstations will be a thing of the past.

EDIT: IBM does have a Power5 workstation.

VIA, and I suppose these guys.

Sun was already selling AMD chips in some of its systems; the Intel deal will not be killing off the Sparc immediately. In fact, a new UltraSparc is slated for this year.

I don't think chips from VIA are used in any desktops. And that article says the chips are for servers.

They're a niche part, but sure they're used in desktops. Usually quite small desktops, but desktops nonetheless. I understand they made an attempt to push into the server space not long ago, but I don't know how much headway they've made. They show up in laptops occasionally.

Mmm, true.

Sure to the Apple nonbelievers they are just Intel processors, but to the followers of Apple once they have been blessed by Steve Jobs, and after the holy rights of installation into a Mac they have been transubstantiated into an Apple processor.
