I have a system built 4 years before:

AMD Athlon 2400+, MSI K7N2 Delta L board with GeForce 4 MX4000 64MB 8x AGP card.

Problem is that I cannot play hi def videos.
I request forum members to post suggestions on good AGP cards which meet my only requirement:
I just want a compatible AGP card which can play 1080p videos clearly & smoothly.

MAX PRICE limit : 100$

update:
I will be upgrading my PSU too and price limit for that is 55-60$

======================================
my complete system config (just in case someone needs to suggest something):

Video AGP card: NVidia GeForce4 MX4000 (64MB video memory).
Hard disk: Total 200GB = IDE HDD 120GB Seagate7200 RPM + IDE 80GB Seagate7200RPM

The HD3850 comes in AGP flavor...
I have no idea what sort of performance that card has though.

I think the MX4000 just doesn't have any sort of MPEG2/H.264 video acceleration. Anything I think from the 6 series and up should be able to. Same thing with the ATI side cards, which is the 9 Series and up.

"clearly and smoothly" depends a lot on bitrate and codec of the 1080p video and cpu power (unless you using something like coreavc) more than video card as i'm not sure anything but the latest (read pcie gf8+, radeon 3xxx) cards accelerate mp4 video decode. i think you'll find that VC-1 and mpeg2 play better than x264 and anything over 5 Mbps on your system will be choppy. anyway, once i moved to new cpu last year (see sig), 1080p at any bitrate and codec is smooth.

if you still want to try agp upgrade, try 6800gt (what i used with my xp3200+), although even that card requires an extra power connector. any *better* agp card uses a pcie to agp bridge and *may* require more stable power (read psu upgrade).

In theory, any Radeon 2400, 2600, or any 3000-series card can play your high-def content, no matter how old the CPU. There is a specific part on these GPUs which is designed to decode HD content. This might mean using their software... I'm not entirely sure what triggers it.

(Don't know about the nVidia side.)

I agree that the $100 is much better spent on upgrading the mobo/CPU. A motherboard with the ATI 780G chipset would easily run 1080P HD Video.

Newegg is currently has a couple of 780G mobos combos with the AMD BE-2400 for around $100.

PowerDVD, and enable Hardware Acceleration. (for those ATI cards)

There are AGP versions of the 2600pro, 2600xt, and 3650 for under $100, but apparently these all have driver issues. If you can sort them out, they'll work great.

My 6800 plays 1080p without problems. All of my x264 stuff is 720p and it plays fine also. Don't know about .264 1080p. I'll encode something and try it. But I think you will be fine with a 6800 series NV card or if you want the best agp available, get the ATI 3850.

..check combo deal details.

$8 shipped for a cheap socket AM2 cooler:

2GB RAM for $43:

...and done. This will be a cheap, low-power solution to your current setup. You should easily be able to sell your old stuff for $50, perhaps more.

my old p4 2.4C @ 2.9ghz with a geforce 6600GT 128MB handled 1080p just fine..

i think your best bet would be to find a use 6800 (7600, 7800, 7950 agp cards are RARE to find) series card or just get a ati radeon 3850..
