Are there any advantages for using a monitor's specific driver?

Whenever I get a new monitor I just plug it to the computer, adjust settings and forget about it.
Now that I'm looking to buy one for someone else, I'm reading some reviews and people complain when there's not a monitor driver for their OS.
Is there an advantage to installing your monitor's driver rather than letting plug & play do it's thing?

Most of the time it doesn't matter for LCD. With CRT you could sometimes not get the correct resolution/refresh without it.
I do use some LCD that are color calibrated for work and they use a driver that matches the monitor with the OS color settings so it is exactly what it is supposed to be.

Advanced power management settings, maybe? If it's not a top tier brand, then they may not have built their monitor to plug-n-play standards and so you'd probably want their driver, but then, is that really a monitor you'd want? Most any good monitor will build to plug-n-play standards I think. But then I always install the monitor driver, myself. It's one of the easiest driver installations ever.
