Are there any Actuaries on ATOT?

I have visited all the websites about it etc. I have visited with actuaries and talked with Profs. But I am not sure if it is for me.

If you are an Actuary, what is your work week like? Lots of overtime, or a lot of flexibility. Basically I want to know what the quality of life is like.

I am aware that the job pays well, but what good is it when you have no time to spend it!

Also, please state what industry you work in.

I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and will be going to the University of Manitoba.

Wow, being an actuary sounds like a really exciting career choice. I take it you don't care for any sort of physical or mental activity other than crunching numbers.

Well, I would rather pursue an honor's Physics degree. However the job prospects are not nearly as good as in Actuarial Mathmatics.

I have played hockey for the past 12 years, and was considering playing junior next year (18-21 year olds). But I will have to give that up .

I enjoy working with numbers and am good at it. Also I am very interested in business.

I am pursuing the actuary career right now. People always make jokes that actuaries dont have a social life, so take it anyway you want.

But to be an actuary, realize the number of exams you have to pass, and from what I heard, it is not a very exciting job, mostly deskjob.

Yes, it is a common joke. I am aware of the professional exams and their difficulty. Also, there are being large changes to the education system of actuaries.

After talking to a long time acutuary it seems that the actuary profession is broadening into financial institutions and other areas. Also, a friend's father owns an actuary business in Winnipeg.

Also, my father is friends with a man who owns a large firm in Vancover who are currently dealing with a lot of money for the Vancover 2008 Olympics. As well, Investors Group and Great West Life Canada are based in Winnipeg.

Funny you brought up this topic....

I'm an actuarial intern at a large insurance company... it sounds like you use lots of formulas and what-not... nah you don't at work. I mean you're going to have to learn it when you go to university... but when you get to the workplace, you see everybody using worksheets in excel and everything. and yes, it is a boring desk job, but eh, whatever. If you're not interested in much (like me) just about everything is boring... however the paycheck is nice.

One tip; learn excel. Seems that's been the only thing I've really used... creating macros and using worksheets. I think everybody in the office uses it... even more so than access... but perhaps that's because nobody knows how to use access? hahaha
