I may take these Logitech Z-340 speakers downstairs and hook them up to the DVD player in the living room, and get myself a new set of speakers to go with te Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 sound card thats on its way from Newegg. Are there any decents ones out that don't require me selling an organ to buy?

May I ask if there is any significant gain from 5.1 to 7.1? It seems to me that if you are sitting at a computer, at a certain point, more speakers aren't going to sound better.

If you're going to go the ProMedia 5.1 + ProMedia 2.1 route, consider paying the additional $20 and going for the ProMedia 5.1 + ProMedia 4.1 route (ProMedia 4.1 = $199.99 at Circuit City until the end of the month). Of course, you'll have 2 extra speakers... you could use those to double up on the fronts or whatever.

how would a 7 speaker setup work ? i'm guessing 2 in front, 2 in back, 1 in the middle-front and the other 2 are on the sides, right ? that sounds pretty impractical for a computer setup, you'd have to crawl into your chair going under the speaker stands. i'm not saying it's stupid or anything, just different. how would you set that up ?

Nope, in fact it is pretty useless unless you have a really big room and speakers that are far away from where you sit.

Usually, the same thing could be said about the difference between 4.1 and 5.1 speaker systems :)

In the computer audio department anyway.

Well, not really, at least the addition of the center channel is a discrete one rather than the addition of the 2 extra surround channels which may or may not be discrete channels depending on what format you're using. Also, the center channel is widely agreed to be the most important channel in surround sound next to the front left and right. The surrounds take a back seat in importance.

Hmmm. I would think that the wires for the rear speakers would be long enough so you could run them along the walls under the carpet or above the ceiling, etc. I though about getting the Altec Lansing 251s' - the got a good rating in Maximum PC and the price is good, under 100 bucks. But I'm wondering if they'll come out with 271s' - 7.1 version....
