Are their any reasons not to install SP3?

so far incompatibility with the MS cash register software, and random crashes on amd-based HP desktops...

also, people recommend upgrading to sp2 first, then sp3 for reasons related to sp3 containing XP RTM gold era files.

My notebook even fails SP3 installation ... can't replace ntdll because it's in use.

Looks like I was lucky, because had it installed OK, I'd now have a borked machine (it has an AMD Sempron in it). Phew.

I have 2 systems I have updated one an older 6-7 year old laptop and no problems at all.

Update: three time now
# 1 older Gateway solo 1450 laptop 1.3ghz Intel 512mb ram XP sp2
#2 The computer in my sig oem XP2
#3 Dell XPS-400 Intel Pentium D915 2 Gb ram oe XP sp2

If you're going to post results of installing sp3, please state the processor type (intel, amd) and box maker. The main problem I see is with hp/amd systems. sp3 supposedly installs the intel processor energy saver s/w on amd systems (all?) by mistake.

I have installed sp3 on a dell intel core duo laptop successfully. It already had sp2 installed. It is odd that sp2 install is recommended (required?) before sp3 install. In the past, subsequent sp's have included all previous necessary updates/patches.

I installed it on 4 computers and have noticed no problems.

All Celerons (Intel)

Box maker is jadinolf, world's greatest box maker.

I installed SP3 on my laptop, played with that for a few hours (fresh reformat and reinstall of XP Professional) then when it seemed to be working fine, I installed it on my PC. So far, no problems that I can find. It's been almost a week...(knock on wood)

i have SP3 v5512 on my rig. specs:

ASUS A7N8X-X
AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ @ 2.2Ghz
1GB DDR 400 RAM
NVIDIA 6600

runs fine and is completly stable.

I've installed it on a few machines to test at work, All are HP Workstations with Intel P4's and ECC mem. No issues thus far.

I've reformatted several machines recently, and rather than downloading all the updates I just used the SP3 and have had no problems.

I upgraded my laptop (HP Pavilion dv5030us) to SP3. AMD Turion ML-37, Win XP MCE '05. Seems mostly okay, but sometimes the sound would suddenly stop working ("No mixer devices installed"). Sometimes WMP 11 will spike the CPU to 100%, sometimes svchost.exe will do the same, sometimes Opera too.

Here's a big caveat right from Microsoft. If you have IE7 installed, then uninstall it BEFORE you install SP3. Otherwise, you cannot uninstall it. Then do the SP3 thing - and then reinstall IE7.

SP3 installed on my rig below with no problem and i dont see any much improvement or performance at all

After installing sp3 on a dell laptop, there is now a problem with it coming out of sleep mode - it doesn't. Don't know yet if this is related to sp3.

i did it as an upgrade earlier. i noticed after i did it, my monitor would never go into "low power" mode even if i set it in the power management.

i had to reformat later anyway to change hard drives... so i installed sp3 with a slip streamed xp disc, and the monitor problem wasnt there. so yeah there might be some wierd problems with sp3. i have an intel machine btw.
