Are the w3school certifications worth it?

I have been interested in certifications for a few months now but know little about them and I noticed that w3schools.com has various certifications and I am wondering if anybody could tell me if these are worth getting.

All I can say is I've never asked for one when hiring, or been asked for one when being hired. If I was interested in them, I'd value one from the Acme School of Computer Stuff over W3Schools.

I am told it's not so much that people are asking for them as much as it is they are nice to put on your resume.

In this case it would only be nice if the prospective hiring company didn't know about w3school. In which case, would you really want to work for them? If so, just make up any set of initials to tack on your resume and save yourself the money.

Depends on how you study, you can get every Microsoft certification for pretty cheap. Those look more impressive on your resume than w3junk certs.

What kind of certs are you looking for? One of my former work collegues got a VMware certification in a span of 2 weeks and now makes double what he did before at his new job in Chicago.

Honestly, I don't even know enough about certs to even know what I'm looking for. I would guess Microsoft certifications if that gives you any idea.

What jobs are you trying to go for? W3schools and Microsoft certificates are very different.

Oh dear is my face red? I have used W3Schools from time to time. Don't tell anyone...

No longer, favorites updated to SitePoint

For me, however, red flags went off about the certifications. Being offered from a site unaffiliated with W3C is suspicious to say the least.

I read through a bit of that w3fools site, and it looks like most of their criticisms are either very nit-picky, or have been fixed.

Not that I would put any weight in w3shool "certifications", but it seems like a perfectly reasonable tutorial site.

I'd have to disagree, every time I've gone to w3school to try to figure out something while googling I just end up wasting a few minutes of my time before going to another site.

It's true that a lot of the criticisms are now outdated, but a primary objection to w3schools was that they were very slow to update their tutorial items as standards and practices changed. The fact that, a few years later, they've finally gotten around to fixing some, or even most, of them is not really a mitigating factor. The standards and practices are still changing, and I'd bet that other parts of the site are now out of date.

well then, w3fools should show how easy it is to update a website and find those new inaccuracies...

W3school is a mediocre reference guide at best, IMO.
