Are the smurfs mammals?

I've always kind of wondered if Smurfs were mammals or not. Ok, everyone knows they have hair, but that is only one aspect of being classified as a mammal. Whether smurfs have the other two major characteristics of mammals (mammary glands and live birth) is a toss up in my opinion. My personal opinion is that they are an egglaying culture, given that there is one female and 101 males. Anyone else have any theories?

Fictional character so it could be any thing you wanted it to be.

Actually, I think they are little made up cartoons derived from a drug induced rendition of talking blueberries during a failed Freudian attempt of some kid to get back at his mom for ever being born.

The smurfs were invented by the Nazis during WWII in a freak genetic experiment. They cannot reproduce, so they're not mammals.

#24: Come on! They have one female servicing a large group of males. That implies a species that lays eggs.
#21: Oh my God, you're crazy! They're so obviously mammals!
#24: Please! She'd be in estrus 24/7 if she didn't lay eggs.
#21: Smurfs don't lay eggs! I won't tell you this again! Papa Smurf has a fvcking beard! They're mammals!

I love the Venture Bros. =0)

BigJ is correct. They cannot reproduce.

Smurfette was actually created by Gargamel.

Gargamel being a Nazi, that I don't know.

What episode is is that she gets created by Gargamel? She's in the pilot episode iirc. The only place I've heard that is Donnie Darko

Considering they have the cognitive thouht of mammals by there dialogue and problem solving skills (i.e. - Mammalian brains), I would think so if they were really real and not fictional characters. But I thought they were created by magic, so that precludes any ties to any type of species.
